Testing the Limits of Tesla Range on My Trip to NY




The November 10 headline In Green Car Report says “Report from Germany: Tesla years ahead, German automakers falling behind.”

Well…on November 14 I corroborated myself that Tesla leadership is real, and it will take a while for any other car manufacturer to match it.

I live in Madison CT and I had to drive to Ithaca NY (285 miles) for a meeting in Ithaca NY. I have gone many times New York (95 miles) o Boston (120 miles) but never this far. It also was my first trip with cold temperature. The morning I left it was 20 F.

I  started my journey at 4:30 am with 350 miles available. Normally  I have used 300-330 Whr (watts per hour) per mile driven but with the cold weather I noticed we started with 450-500 Whr.

I set the destination and the computer calculated the route, found all Tesla Super Chargers on the road and suggested to stop in Roscoe NY after 164 miles. I decided instead to stop in Middletown NY after 135 miles. It was 6:30am and I was ready for a cup of coffee. I had 150 miles left when I stop and restarted with 250 miles after 20 minute. I also stopped for approx. 10 minutes in Roscoe for a coffee refill. Then I went all the way to Ithaca where I arrived at the Tesla super chargers with approx. 20% left. I charged the car for 45 minutes and left for my meeting. I will tell you more about my meeting in the future. On my way back the computer planned a stop in NewburghNY.  This is a very busy charging location. There were only 2 out of the 8 stations available. The computer was telling me to stop for 20 minutes and then stop for 15 minutes in Orange CT. I decided that I would stay longer enough so that I would make it back home with no more stops. I charged for 30 minutes and I made it back home.

My experience on the road was the living testimony of the headline on Green Car Report a few days early. It will take a while until any other electric car will be able to go from Madison CT to Ithaca NY and come back in the same day.

Tesla has close to 6,500 super chargers in the US.

Electrify America states that it will have 2,000 super chargers by the end of 2019, EVGO has approx. 1,200.

It will take a while until any alternative charging network will be able to match Tesla’s network.
It will be very important for the growth of these vehicles. It is true that most of the time home charging the prevailing mode but if you want you use an EV like any other cars the charging infrastructure becomes critical. 200 new EV models will be launched in to the US market in the next 2 years and many more DC fast chargers will be needed to allow drive across the US just as I was able to do with my Tesla.

Congress Urged to Reinstate Alt-Fuel Tax Credit



One of the main factors enticing people to make the switch to electric vehicles is the incentives provided by the government. In mid-January, Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVA) called on Congress to reinstate the Alternative Fuels Tax Credit (ATFC), which provided tax relief at a rate of $0.50 on the gallon for using alternative fuels.

During an administration which has sought to cut back regulations on the fossil fuel industry, these tax credits are sorely needed in order to boost both interest and investment in EV technologies. As this credit lapsed December 31st, 2017, an extension to these clean air investment incentives would pair nicely with several car manufacturers entering the EV market in 2019. With increased affordability and variety of electric vehicles, in combination with tax incentives, we'll see great benefits for the industry in the years to come.

Expansion of Food Waste Separation in NYC
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) recently published a proposed rule that aims to expand organic waste source separation. According to the proposal, food scraps and other organic waste make up more than one-third of all commercial waste in NYC. “Diverting this material from landfills to use for soil enhancing compost, or as an energy source in aerobic and anaerobic digesters, is a key component of the city’s goal of sending zero waste to landfills by the year 2030,” said the DSNY in the proposal. The MicroboxBio is a great solution to treat raw gas from the anaerobic digesters.

Recovering Stranded Gas to Generate Power

Last month I took some customers to Argentina to visit Galileo Headquarters. I have been there many times and I enjoy going back because I always find something new. The elevator to the offices offers a great view of the factory floor below and this time I had a strange sensation when I was on the elevator. Down below there was something that looked like a Cryobox but I had the sensation that was bigger. As soon as I arrived I had to join a meeting and forgot about this.
Late in the morning the time came to visit the factory and finally my curiosity was satisfied.
My feeling that this equipment was a Cryobox on hormones was correct. It was Galileo’s new creative solution to produce LNG in a totally independent solution using a gathering system for stranded gas. The equipment that I saw in production was number 4 and I knew that many more were on the way. I came back with many pictures and videos but I have been waiting till now to talk about it. Today Galileo Technologies announced that they will supply 14 Cryobox-Trailer® LNG Production Stations to fuel the new power generation plant that Methax. A special purpose company also owned by Grupo Galileo, is building in Anchoris, Mendoza Province, Argentina. These portable and small-scale liquefaction units will be deployed to several orphan wells distributed throughout Malargüe’s region.
By liquefying stranded gas, Galileo Technologies will supply up to 130,000 gallons of LNG per day, which will make this new power plant immune to Argentina’s natural gas shortage during winter time and the rising costs of switching from natural gas to diesel or fuel oil.
The LNG produced on-site by the Cryobox units will be transported by road through cryogenic ISO containers from the well-heads to Anchoris, where it will be re-gasified. This operation will create an LNG virtual pipeline between every well and Anchoris. The Methax natural gas-fired power plant is being installed at a key location of the grid in Mendoza and will supply 40 megawatts (MW) of power, which will alleviate the stress on transport and distribution power lines.

THE WORLD EV MARKET IS OVER ITS TIPPING POINT


Will Model 3 disrupts the Automotive Market just like Model T did 110 years ago?

Madison, CT - On October 1, 1908, Ford completed the first Model T Ford in Detroit. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford would build some 15 million Model T cars. It was the longest production run of any automobile model in history until Volkswagen launched the Beetle it in 1972.
This week Tesla delivered the first 30 Model 3 to some of its employees. Production will ramp up in the next months and it is expected to reach 5,000 units per week. With over 400,000 bookings Model 3 is already the star of the EV world. We do not know if it will reach the sales of Model T but the start is very promising.
The Diesel Gate is influencing consumers around to world and moving the focus toward low emissions or no emission vehicles. Sales of diesel cars in Europe have dropped 19% this year. Great Britain has banned the use of vehicle with combustion engines after 2040.

We think the EV market has reached and gone over its tipping point and we expect a major acceleration during the year 2018 and 2019 once Tesla will be on its way to deliver its bookings of the Model 3 and all other car manufacturers will launch their EV lines.
Another revolution is under way in the charging infrastructure. With the larger battery packs we now have EVs with ranges from 238 of the Bolt to 310 of the Model 3. With the current Level 2 EV charging stations we can expect 8-10 hours for a full charge. Even with a fast charger of the current production it will take 60-90 minutes for a full charge.
EV charging manufacturers have been working on solutions that combine much more powerful chargers and energy storage. They are moving from the 50KW of power to 350-400KW. Furthermore, they are working at energy storage solutions to reduce the major impact on the electric grid with these high levels of power.
EV charging companies are working toward solutions that will allow the recharging of an electric vehicle with times comparable to the refueling of a gas car.
The major drivers behind the EV world are converting the transportation industry to zero emission with products that attract the mass market with design and performance comparable or in some cases better than the classic combustion engines.

U.K. Wants All Electric Vehicles In Near Future

"We...want nearly every car and van on U.K. roads to be zero emission by 2050." The U.K. has recently added itself to the list of EU countries with big ambitions for the future of vehicle emissions, planning to commit 600 billion British pounds towards the use of "ultra low" emission vehicles by 2020.



Meanwhile in Amercia, we continue to fall behind our neighbors across the pond. Hopefully we will begin to follow their example soon and invest in an infrustructure that will facilitate the use of only electric cars and ultra low emission vehicles. Certainly there are states like California, Texas, and Colorado that have taken a jump out in front with these projects, but more need to follow suit for our country to transition as a whole.
